LONDON – The ninth-place South Huron Rush traveled to London July 18 to take on third-place Dorchester in London and Area Women’s Soccer League action, losing 5-0.
The game started with promise for South Huron as they controlled much of the early play and managed to keep most of the action in the Dorchester end.
Despite South Huron’s early success, they managed to give up the opening goal. A hustling South Huron defender tried to clear the ball, but slipped. The opposing striker capitalized and got a shot off. The shot was to the corner, but keeper Katie Brady was left
helpless when she also slipped.
The goal seemed to suck the air out of the Rush, said South Huron coach Tim Hundey.
The rest of the half belonged to Dorchester.
Mistakes, missed coverages and covering the opposition but leaving too much space marred the first half for the visitors and the score showed it, Hundey said.
Dorchester added four more markers before the first half whistle was blown.
Hundey said the second half showed more of what South Huron is capable of doing. They played Dorchester even and the game ended in a Dorchester victory.
"This was a tough one to swallow," Hundey said. "We can do better, we have to."
South Huron has lost two league games in a row by a lopsided margin and is mired in an eight-game winless skid.
"The tough part now for the team, is what absolutely has to be done, that is to stay positive and to keep believing in your own abilities and your teammate’s abilities," Hundey said. "We have to keep playing like we know we can win."
The Rush have a week to regroup and then take to the field July 26 at the London Portuguese Club for an 8:30 p.m. kickoff.
