Make the move

Count us among those who would like to see the Exeter Town-Wide Yard Sale moved sometime into June.

Last Saturday’s second annual “Exeter is on Sale” event went ahead as promised, rain or shine. The trouble is, there were only about 10 minutes of “shine” in the middle of frigid temperatures, strong winds, rain and even snow.

Put simply, while an estimated few thousand bargain hunters did brave the weather to travel to Exeter to check out the more than 100 yard sales in town, the weather conditions were too poor for most people to want to venture outside. It also poured rain at last year’s town-side sale, although it was warmer and no snowflakes made an appearance.

Organizers are now pondering the idea of moving the annual town-wide yard sale into June next year, possible Father’s Day weekend. This is a good idea.

The town-wide yard sale is a great event — not only do more than 100 households participate, so do local businesses, and there is a positive economic spinoff from having thousands of people visit Exeter. In addition to spending their money at the yard sales, many out-of-towners will shop at local businesses, eat at local restaurants and fill their cars up with gas.

Also, the town-wide yard sale is an occasion for many fundraisers to be held, thus helping out local charitable organizations.

But let’s make the event as great as we can. The weather in this part of the world in May is simply too unpredictable, or it’s predictably bad. Moving it into June won’t guarantee dry, sunny weather, but it should at least take out the freezing-cold possibility-of-snow factor.
